Your digestion, blood pressure, pupil dilation, circulation, heart rate, and breathing are among the many body functions that consistently occur involuntarily, meaning they happen completely “automatically,” without you having to think about them. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulates these functions to help maintain homeostasis.
When the ANS fails to regulate these functions properly, it disrupts the body’s equilibrium, throwing involuntary processes off balance; this is “autonomic dysfunction.”
Patients with symptoms of ongoing autonomic dysfunction have a disorder that falls into the category of “dysautonomia.” Dysautonomia is a general term for a spectrum of autonomic disorders, but your provider will typically diagnose a specific underlying condition, such as POTS or autonomic neuropathy.
Whenever you hear of someone “having” dysautonomia, they mean they have an autonomic disorder.
Symptoms of Dysautonomia (Autonomic Disorders)
There are multiple types of dysautonomias (autonomic disorders), so “symptoms of dysautonomia” vary between conditions. However, many autonomic disorders share common signs and symptoms, including the following:
- Orthostatic Intolerance (OI): Symptoms that develop or worsen when standing upright and improve when sitting or lying down, such as dizziness, lightheadedness, brain fog, fatigue, blurred vision, heart palpitations, and difficulty standing for long periods. POTS is one of the best-known disorders that produces orthostatic intolerance, but it isn’t the only one.
- Orthostatic Hypotension (OH): A notable drop in blood pressure after standing or sitting up that may cause dizziness, weakness, blurred vision, fainting, confusion, or feeling like you may pass out.
- Heart Rate Changes: An unusually fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat, heart palpitations, or difficulty regulating heart rate during physical activity or changes in body position.
- Chronic Fatigue and Brain Fog: Persistent physical exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, and mental sluggishness that can interfere with everyday activities.
- Sleep Disturbances: Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, waking feeling unrefreshed, or excessive daytime sleepiness due to autonomic nervous system dysfunction.
- Digestive and Bladder Problems: Constipation, diarrhea, nausea, bloating, urinary urgency, frequent urination, or difficulty emptying the bladder because the autonomic nervous system helps regulate these involuntary functions.
- Sweating and Temperature Regulation Problems: Excessive or reduced sweating, heat or cold intolerance, flushing, or difficulty maintaining a comfortable body temperature.
- Headaches and Chronic Pain: Frequent headaches or migraines, along with widespread pain or increased pain sensitivity. Poor sleep and nervous system dysregulation may also contribute to muscle tension and aggravate TMJ-related jaw pain.
Dysautonomias: Types of Autonomic Disorders
Here are common dysautonomias that feature some combination of the symptoms listed above at varying degrees:
- Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS): The most commonly recognized form of dysautonomia. POTS is characterized by a rapid heart rate, as well as dizziness, fatigue, brain fog, exercise intolerance, and difficulty standing for long periods.
- Neurocardiogenic (Vasovagal) Syncope: Episodes of fainting caused by sudden drops in heart rate and blood pressure, often triggered by standing, heat, stress, or pain.
- Pure Autonomic Failure (PAF): A rare neurodegenerative disorder that primarily impacts autonomic functions such as blood pressure regulation, sweating, bladder function, and digestion.
- Multiple System Atrophy (MSA): A progressive neurological disease that affects both autonomic function and movement, commonly causing blood pressure fluctuation, bladder problems, and significant sleep disorders.
- Autoimmune Autonomic Ganglionopathy (AAG): An uncommon autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks autonomic nerves, leading to widespread autonomic dysfunction.
- Familial Dysautonomia (Hereditary Sensory and Autonomic Neuropathy Type III): A rare inherited disorder affecting the development and function of autonomic and sensory nerves.
- Secondary Autonomic Neuropathy: Autonomic dysfunction caused by another condition, such as diabetes, autoimmune disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyloidosis, or certain infections.

Poor Sleep

Although dysautonomia does not directly cause TMJ disorders, the poor sleep, nervous system dysregulation, inflammation, and increased pain sensitivity associated with autonomic dysfunction can worsen jaw pain and contribute to chronic clenching or muscle tension.
