How Does Class IV Laser Therapy Work?
During treatment, a handheld emitter is moved over the affected area in a gliding motion, delivering red and near-infrared light that penetrates to the tissue beneath. That light slightly raises the tissue’s temperature, creating a subtle shift with a noticeable effect: increased local blood circulation and muscle relaxation. Together, they cause a perceptible reduction in pain and stiffness.
Here at TMJ & Sleep Solutions of Alabama, we use the Summus Medical Laser, a Class IV system chosen for its clinical track record of delivering consistent results in patients who suffer from different kinds of pain.
Class IV Laser vs. Cold Laser: What’s the Difference?
What’s the difference between Class IV laser therapy and cold laser therapy? “Cold laser” typically refers to lower-power Class IIIb devices that produce no detectable sensation. Class IV lasers operate at a higher power and deliver a gentle, perceptible warmth, which allows the light to reach deeper tissue in a shorter amount of time.
Neither treatment is universally superior; efficacy depends on what’s being treated and how deep the target tissue sits. For the jaw and facial muscle work that we specialize in, the added depth of Class IV is often a better fit.
Patients also ask us if cold laser therapy is the same as red light therapy. Not exactly. While both use light in similar wavelength ranges, they differ in power output, treatment depth, and the clinical evidence behind specific uses.
