How to Sleep Better

If you’re determined to sleep better, it’s smart to use modern technology to help you monitor your sleep. Fortunately, this doesn’t need to be expensive, and there are plenty of free and cheap apps available on your smartphone to help you monitor the quality of your sleep and wake you up at the best time.

Sleep Cycle

Sleep Cycle is free to download on Apple and Android, has a 4.5 rating from over 82,000 reviews on Google Play, and over 1 million downloads. It’s designed to help you create better bedtime habits, monitor your sleep, and wake up better. After each night it will offer you detailed sleep analysis for you to look at, and you can notice trends over time. The free version features all the graphs and a gentle wake up, where it will wake you up when it notices your sleep is at its lightest.

SnoreLab

SnoreLab is available on Apple and Android and has over 1 million downloads on Google Play with a 4.3 rating from over 12,000 reviews. SnoreLab records, measures and tracks your snoring and helps you reduce it. It’s a simple, free app with some premium options, and has been encouraged for use by those who suspect they may have sleep apnea.

Fitbit

If you have a Fitbit fitness tracker your app will track your sleep each night (without you needing to remember to set it up) and show you when you were at your lightest sleep, deepest, REM and the exact length of sleep you got in each category. If you’re looking to lose weight as a way to improve your overall health and sleep quality, this is an extra bonus of owning one of their fitness trackers.

YouTube

How does YouTube help you sleep? Simple, there are thousands of videos on the platform that either give you a “sleep talk-down”, where someone will guide you toward sleep (extremely useful if you struggle to quiet your mind at the end of the day) or play hours of soothing sleep music in whatever style you prefer. These videos can help you create a bedtime ritual, so eventually playing a familiar sleep talk-down or piece of music will put you to sleep.

Runtastic Sleep Better

Available on Apple and Android, Runtastic Sleep Better has over 5 million downloads on Google Play and a 4.1 rating from over 119,000 reviews. This app is a simple way of tracking your sleep cycle with a smart alarm clock, as well as tracking your daily habits that affect the quality of your sleep.

These apps are all a great place to start, but they can’t replace a medical sleep study. If you’re in the Birmingham AL area, you can contact us for a consultation.
