18 Dec Can I Buy a CPAP Machine without a Sleep Study? What You Should Know
“Can I buy a CPAP machine without a sleep study?”
There are a couple of reasons that people might ask about this. Perhaps you’ve already undergone a sleep study and received a diagnosis of sleep apnea, but you’ve never been set up with a CPAP machine. Or you’ve had one before, but the prescription expired. Maybe you’ve never actually had a sleep study, but everyone who’s ever been in earshot of you while you were sleeping reports that you pause your breathing or snore all night.
Regardless of why you’re asking this question, our sleep specialists are here to provide you with an honest, knowledgeable answer. Keep reading (we promise we’ll get to the point quickly).
Can I buy a CPAP machine without undergoing a sleep study or receiving a sleep apnea diagnosis?
In short, no; you can’t (and shouldn’t) get a CPAP machine without a sleep study or sleep apnea diagnosis.
You cannot purchase a CPAP machine without a sleep apnea diagnosis, as a prescription is required to obtain a CPAP machine. And to get a sleep apnea diagnosis, you have to undergo a sleep study.
Can I purchase a CPAP machine without a prescription if I have a confirmed diagnosis of sleep apnea?
No. In the U.S., you cannot buy a CPAP machine without a prescription from a licensed doctor, even if you already have a sleep apnea diagnosis.
Even if you already have a sleep apnea diagnosis, there are risks to using a CPAP that is not custom-adjusted to suit your specific needs.
How can I get a prescription for a CPAP machine?
If you have a sleep apnea diagnosis and you’ve had a CPAP before:
Simply bring documentation of your diagnosis and a copy of your previous CPAP prescription to your primary care physician or a specialist in sleep medicine. They will help you renew your prescription and connect you with a medical equipment supplier to set up a new CPAP machine.
However, if it’s been a while since you received your last CPAP machine, your physician may advise that you need a new examination/sleep study or that your former prescription needs to be adjusted.
If you have a sleep apnea diagnosis but you’ve never had a CPAP machine:
Visit the physician who diagnosed you with sleep apnea or bring documentation of your diagnosis to another sleep specialist. They will help you determine whether you are eligible for a CPAP machine, either based on data from your last sleep study, or they will order a new examination/sleep study. From there, they will guide you through the rest of the process.
If you don’t have a sleep apnea diagnosis:
Until you have a sleep apnea diagnosis, your chances of getting a CPAP machine are incredibly slim. And even in the unlikely event that you could get your hands on one without a prescription, it wouldn’t be worth the hassle because you would still need to have it custom-fitted.
If you believe you need a CPAP machine to improve your sleep breathing and/or overall health, you must start by presenting your symptoms to a primary care physician or a sleep specialist who takes new patients without referrals.
Generally, this is the path you should follow:
- Visit your primary care physician/general practitioner and ask about sleep apnea, explaining the symptoms you have that are consistent with what you know about the condition.
- With your doctor’s referral (that is, if your insurance requires specialist referrals), see a sleep specialist for a preliminary appointment about a sleep study.
- If your doctor prescribes you a sleep study, follow through with it and listen carefully to the results from your doctor.
- If your study results in you getting a sleep apnea diagnosis, discuss treatment options with your doctor.
- If the doctor determines that you are eligible for CPAP machine treatment, inform them of your interest in this option. They will then prescribe a CPAP machine and arrange for you to be custom-fitted by a medical equipment supplier.
What sleep apnea treatment options are available as alternatives to CPAP machines?
Although CPAP machines are an effective treatment for many sleep apnea patients, the side effects can be hard for some people to endure. Fortunately, we offer CPAP alternatives that work for many patients, such as oral appliance therapy (OAT), which has shown the most success in treating patients across the entire spectrum of sleep apnea severity, either as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with CPAP or another treatment.
