Three Easy Ways to Combat Daytime Drowsiness

Daytime Drowsiness

Sleep apnea can cause a wide plethora of problems in a person’s day-to-day life. The word apnoea, apnea being the US version, is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as “temporary cessation of breathing.” Because of the nature of the condition, interrupting sleep and reducing the quality of sleep, someone can experience drowsiness during the day or while driving. Daytime drowsiness can range anywhere from slightly annoying to downright dangerous.

Some tips to gain more energy in a healthy way include:

  • Eat foods that provide energy naturally. Examples include almonds, dark chocolate, or fresh fruits; apples are said to wake a person up as much as a cup of coffee.
  • Exercise regularly. Web MD cites studies that have shown consistently that “Sedentary people who completed a regular exercise program reported improved fatigue compared to groups that did not exercise.” 90% of the studies proved this.
  • Get more sleep. This may seem like an obvious answer, but sometimes it takes a concentrated effort to put aside more time for ourselves to sleep. During sleep, the body, and brain repair cells and neurons, and we also clear out adenosine that we have accumulated in our brains during the day. According to Harvard, our brains are constantly accumulating adenosine during wakeful hours, and this is said to create the feeling of sleepiness. The more adenosine, the sleepier we feel.

Granted, getting more good quality sleep can be easier said than done. If someone is experiencing sleep apnea symptoms, it can really be difficult to get enough sleep. Stopping breathing 40-50 times a night or waking up from the sound of one’s own snoring can interrupt someone’s sleep dramatically.
